About this Event
In-person talk by an Indigenous land defender, with the film The Illusion of Abundance about the fight against exploitation in Latin America
An opportunity to hear Indigenous land defender Laura Vicuña Pereira Manso speak about her experiences in the Karipuna Indigenous territory, where she works with Brazil’s Indigenous people who have been fighting to protect their land for generations.
The evening includes an exclusive Canadian screening of The Illusion of Abundance, a film about three extraordinarily brave women who fought to defend their land against exploitation and extractivism in Latin America.
Carolina, Berta and Maxima were part of a global movement until Berta was murdered. Land defenders in Latin America continue to hold governments and corporations to account when they trample Indigenous rights in the quest for cheap resources and limitless profits. This film tells the story with three women of tireless courage, fighting to protect the environment even when their lives are at risk.
All proceeds go to support the work of Canadian Jesuits International (CJI) with land defenders in Latin America.
